It was, for example, the only Christmas for which we’ve ever had to set an alarm (all with good reason...Daniel - cousin and pilot - had to be on an early flight out of Syracuse). It was also the first Christmas where Kay and I bought each other the same book. And shorts.
Bestowal of the Most Unique Present Award goes to Dad, who gave Kay and I purses concocted out of recycled plastic bags, hand-made by a co-worker’s daughter. Procurement involved a dodgy trip to a diner in Oswego in order to pick them.
We also set a family record for most number of people on a skype call (10). Shout-outs to the Stavers and Grandma Orkis.
Gardner’s added a new monstrosity to their already Chuck E Cheese/Dave and Busters-worthy collection of arcade games, so we put on our “We’re so good at basketball” personas.
This was, of course, followed by our crowd pleasing Rock Band performances.
And Dad, unable to resist the temptation of a perfect crawlspace, wriggling his way underneath the girthiest of Christmas trees.
We ended the night at Phillips’, searching our souls through deep questions* such as, “If you could only have one toy for the rest of your life, what would it be?”. While most of us pondered a bit and went with ski boats in the end, Dad, whom we all had pegged for a plane, surprised us with an unwavering…2-man submarine.
Merry Christmas!
