The Source

A few weeks ago, the PEPFAR Implementer’s Conference was held in Kampala – the significance of this being that several of the folks I’ve worked with in Zambia, South Africa, Namibia and Baltimore were in town. It was great to catch up over dinners and cocktails…and provided a reason to head out to Jinja on Saturday and visit the source of the Nile.

The source isn’t necessarily one of the country’s more remarkable attractions…a lot of hype and entrance fees to see an indistinct transition from Lake Victoria to the River Nile (we skipped it last year when we were in Jinja for rafting)…but, worth checking off the list. It did involve a boat ride – always a plus, no matter how rickety the craft or futile the flotation devices. We saw the Gandhi memorial (some of his ashes were scattered there) and hit up the Black Lantern for a pleasant lunch overlooking Bujagali Falls. But, quite frankly? I couldn’t put my finger on what John Speke was so excited about. My figurative finger, anyway.
